Monster Table Quiz at the Lounge!!!!!!

Our Table Quiz is due to take place next Thursday 3rd Dec, at Bulgaden Castle Lounge.

It promises to be an exciting evening, full of laughs and socialising, but also a great quiz, set by our own local quiz expert Pat Corkery, with a fabulous 500 euro prize for the top table. Plus 2nd prize is a round of golf for 4 at Ballineety Golf Club, and there are other exciting consolation prizes for the runner up tables. On the night we will be also holding a raffle, and there are lots of prizes for that, kindly donated by a range of local shops and businesses.
Plus extra spot/door prizes

Lets not forget too, that the Quiz night, will also be a valuable fundraiser for Castle United, its an expensive thing to run the club for a season and to plan for the clubs development, which we hope next year will include a Junior club. Fundraising is therefore a constant and vital part of the clubs activities.

So please, especially Parents, try and support this night.

Just a bit of back news from when we were off air....

(some of the boys who competed, with their own Castle United awards for great play at the tournament, left to right, Ken Duce (coach) Danny Maloney (Man of the Tournament) Michael Duggan (Man of the Match) Liam Maloney (coach) James Herbert (Man of the Match) Mike Herbert (coach) and Michael Duce (Goal of the Week) Next photo Rodger Cleary (Man of the Match) with Mike Herbert (coach)

Its too hard to report back all what was missed, but I would like to share a couple of things....

The first was the massive success of our U8 boys team at the tournament in Kilmallock last week.... out of 8 teams we came 2nd, beaten in the final by Ardpatrick.

This was a huge boost for all of us at the club, and I think the boys really enjoyed their day out. (thanks to Kilmallock AFC for inviting us and for the refreshments etc).

Fantastic Matches last weekend

Last Weekend saw 4 home matches up at Kilbreedy, and they were all great to watch, most of the parents I spoke too said they thoughly enjoyed them.

Although we still did not get a win, all our teams are that much more competitive now...... and we even got some great goals... there are lots of talent on the teams, and it is quite startling how some of our players have improved and you can see they will have great potential in the future....

The team merchandise, hoodies, kit, kitbags etc are available to order now, but they must be in by Friday to ensure delivery for Christmas, please call around to Ken's house if you need an order form.

New awards scheme and winners + training & matches

Castle United A.F.C would like to announce our new club awards, the winners of these will be announced here and in the Vale Star each Thursday, and on our Bebo page. The catagories are as follows; Goal of the Week, Pass of the Week, Man of the Match (one for each match played) Plus at the end of every month we will have a 'Player of the month', and a 'Most improved player of the month', and these two winners will receive a sports shop voucher.

This weeks award winners are;

Goal of the Week - Shane Carroll
This goal was scored by Shane in the U12's away match v's Cappamore Celtic B, Shane hit a fantastic shot which saw the ball go sailing over the goalkeepers head from around 30 yards away from goal, and it has to be said it had a touch of class about it, well done Shane, same again next week please!!

Pass of the Week - Marty Farrell
This was made by Marty who looked up and sent in an exceptionally well weighted pass into our forwards to run onto, this pass completely opened up the defence of the opposition and gave the team a fantastic attack on goal, well done Marty.

Man of the Match U10's - Danny Moloney
This was a close call as there were a number of very good individual performances, but this award has to go to Danny who was a constant threat to the opposition in the home game v's Holycross, well done Danny.

Man of the Match U12's - Marty Farrell
In a game where all the lads played well and worked tirelessly for the team during the U12's game, Marty's performance was immense, his very strong defensive play, passing and movement was a great display of how to play the game both in terms of breaking down the oppostions attacks and setting up our own, well done Marty.

Player of the Month - Philip McCarthy
The 'Player of the Month' award for September goes to our U14's goalkeeper, who has instantly stepped into the position taking command of the ball, and making some great saves. He has a true talent for this position, and if he keeps working and improving on his game the sky is the limit.Well done Philip.

Most improved Player of the Month - Caoimhe McCarthy
Our 'Most improved player of the month' is one of our U10's girls players, who has improved a huge amount since starting training, she works hard both in training and in the matches and she has the makings of a very good soccer player, well done Caoimhe, keep up the good work.

The Weekend Report

Well afraid I cannot report a win, our best chance I felt was in our U14's probably our longest established team, but annoyingly their opponents didn't show up for the match..... (maybe they had heard we were going to win too!!;)

The U10's match on Saturday was a little disapointing, we had hoped for a close match and possibly even a win after a good showing in our previous match to Rathkeale, but despite some good strong individual players, our passing and positional play let us down, however we have some good players in the team and with a bit more work in training on those things should soon have them winning.

Sunday's U12's match away to Cappamore, however gave us good hope, the lads had learnt a lot from their last game and improved shed loads, their passing was better and were unfortunate to go in at half time 2 - 0 down as we had lots of possesion in the oppositions half, but unfortunately we conceded two soft goals, however with the way we were playing we went into the second half with a real hope that we could win this game, we started brightly but was caught on the counter attack and lost an early goal, but the lads kept plugging away and attacking and eventually with a moment of class from Shane Carroll who struck a fantastic shot from a good distance away from goal, the ball went sailing over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net, a shot any player would have been proud of, this give us real belief we could get a result, but in our attempts to score more the eagerness of the whole team meant they had forgotten their positions in the field and we had nearly all the team in the oppositions half, this left a big gap at the back of the field and we were caught on the counter attack and disappointingly we lost a further two goals, but it has to be said this was a very good performance, and gave all the lads a great boost and belief that their first win is just around the corner, which im sure it is, well played lads.

Fantastic First Ever Match for our U14's GIRLS

After great efforts to scrape a team together for this age group, we were still 3 players short going into Sundays match, luckily for us Charleville were in the same position, and so the match went ahead 8 a side. (this included playing one of our nine year olds!) However they proved themselves a side worthy of sticking with as they worked their legs off to keep up with their opponents who looked mainly older girls. We eventually went down 3-1 (and what a good goal it was from Shauna Carroll) but fantastic effort girls. We particularly want to thank Leanne and Joanne for playing at such short notice - great little defenders too.... Infact I was so impressed I want to mention them all..... Our fantasic goalie who definately saved us a number of times Shauna Treacey, hard working Niamh and Michelle in midfield, young Charlotte who really enjoyed her match going forward. Lastly even younger Caoimhe who ran rings around their defenders.

But this team really needs the support of some other local girls to keep the team viable, so please anyone able to play or just wishing to try and train with us, come along, no soccer experience necessary!

Another Debut - This time the youngest members of Castle United!

SPOT THE BALL! Who cares about positions, just let me kick that ball : )
The U6's get stuck in......

Our U6's and U8's mixed boys and girls teams, both played Knockainey in friendly matches today, here at home in Kilbreedy. A large contingent of parents and supporters looked on, so thank you all for your support.
I am sure you will all agree the kids had great fun, and so did we! The smoothies also went down a treat with all our teams this weekend, when i say went down, it was literally the truth on some of the little ones, (the launderette will be busy on Monday!) So thanks Diarmuid and co at Wild Orchard for providing a tasty and healthy treat for our teams. Pity we could not scrape a win, but apparently there are rematches in a fortnight, watch this space!

The Girls get to play at last

Our U10's Girls team who had their team debut against Murroe B on Saturday with their team manager young Aishling McCarthy.

The Girls did us proud here at Castle United too, they eventually lost 1-0 after a sterling performance. .. Well done all of you, it looks like this is one of our teams to watch!

Change to this weekend fixtures

There is a slight change to this weekends fixtures, Saturday now see's our U10's girls (not boys as previously thought...oops!) take on Murroe B in their first match this season, they were due to play sunday at 3pm but this has been brought forward and they will now play on Saturday with a 12.30 kick off, then our u6's & U8s will take on Knockainey with a 2.30 kick off for both age groups, finaly on Sunday our U14 girls (not boys, got it wrong again!!, sorry about that) play Charleville with a 4pm kick off.

We wish them all luck and hope they get great enjoyment from these matches, as we have seen from our previous matches to date it will take a few matches to develop their touch and passing and playing together as a team, this takes time and practice so please come along and give them all your support this weekend.

This weeks action

This week will be a busy week for Castle Utd, Saturday will see our U6's & U8's have their first matches when they take on Knockainey at home, kick off will be at 2.30pm. Then on Sunday at 'home' the U10's have their first 'Cup' match taking on Murroe B and if they play as well this week as the did last weekend then i think they will take a lot of beating, kick off for this match is at 3pm. The U14's boys then have their first match in the 'Cup' taking on Charleville, again the lads are at 'home' and if repeating last saturdays performance im sure they will go close to getting their first win of the season, kick off for this match is at 4pm. Good luck to all involved, im sure its going to be an exciting weekend's action, so come out and give the lads your support.

The weekend report !!!

(our U10's squad with coach Ken Duce and assistant coach Colin Greene)

Well there was sure signs of us starting to become competitive this weekend.

Saturday saw our U14's lose out 3-2 to Meanus, that was a very encouraging scoreline, well done Henry who scored our two goals! The U12's had a tougher game when beaten by a larger score line against Charleville, but a stronger side than Meanus maybe?

There were lots of good individual performances with the 12's, just need to get the team to work together, but this will take time, especially as there was lots of new signings this week.

Sunday saw the U10's play Rathkeale, probably the strongest side in our league.

Well it went well, and we were leading at one point, however we were beaten in the end which was unfortunate as there were lots of good individual performances again, and we also had 3 lads only signed for us this week, so out of the 8 a side team, again its a very new to them all.

Here at the club, we would like to say well done to you all!! I am sure winning is only around the corner, and sure, the having fun, and playing and training is what it is all about, not the winning at all (honestly!!).

LOTS OF ACTION THIS WEEKEND

First of all I would like to mention all our new members who have signed for the club in the last couple of weeks. Welcome to Castle United. The club is going from strength to strength and we have huge plans for the future, so I hope you all enjoy the journey with us.

This weekend we will have away league matches for our U10's U12's and U14's, whilst our U6's and U8's will have their first ever matches the following week at home, both friendlies against Knockainey.

Details of the fixtures will be confirmed shortly.

Take Heart from Harraby United!!

Loved this story in the press today, a boys soccer team from the UK, Harraby United were formed in 2006, since then they have played over 90 matches, league and friendlies, losing every one, their first ever match they went down 19-0. However after 3 seasons of trying they have finally won a game!!

Well done lads for perseverance!

Now I hope it doesn't take Castle United quite so long to get off the mark! :) but it does show you that all new teams are up against it when they first start up. It also shows you need time and patience before you will start winning matches

Yesterdays Match

Our U12's played at home yesterday, in the finest weather we have seen so far this year. Which was good news for the parents basking on the bankside, but perhaps a bit too warm for the lads playing!

Unfortunately for us, we met a strong team, who have been playing together for the last 4 years and it showed. They scored several times in the first half, and could have scored more, but for the safe hands of our keeper Shane. However our lads battled hard, and once they have more knowledge of the game, you can see how there is talent there amongst them. There was however great excitement amongst our supporters when JoJo scored a goal in the 2nd half!

All in all its a steep learning curve for our lads, most of whom had never played soccer till a month ago. The main thing is we are all together as a community, the lads are enjoying themselves training with their friends, and learning the great game!

We cannot expect to see any great results for another couple of months I am sure, but hopefully along the way we will become more competitive.

International Match Trip

By all accounts the trip to the International soccer match, Ireland v's South Africa was a great success.

42 adults and children took the coach organised by the club, we managed to get very reasonable priced tickets from the FAI, and many people said they appreciated the convenience of travelling with the club.

The match was enjoyed by all, who could complain about a win! Plus the stop at the chipper on the way home was much appreciated especially by the teenagers!

When is the next trip out Ken?!

BAG PACKING - An Appreciation!!

Just to let everyone out there know, that the bag packing fundraiser at Dunnes Stores in Charleville, was a huge success. We raised a good few, much needed euros for the clubs ongoing expenses.

Thank you, to all 28 willing 'volunteers' (you know what they say 'one volunteer is worth 10 pressed men') Well done to all who helped out, it was a great success, and dare I say it almost fun? Well maybe fun is not quite the word, but we had a laugh, and we had a good chat with some very friendly, and generous! customers.

Thanks also to the very accomodating staff and manager at Dunnes. Not forgetting all who shopped in Dunnes, and popped all their change in our tubs..

PS is this a good time to ask you to put Dec. 13th in your diaries?? ;)

Todays U12's Match

Today our U12's had their first match in the league, and like our U10'S & U14's before them in their first games, the lads worked hard but our first touch and passing allowed the opposition a lot of possesion which they took full advantage of, but again in the second half as the game wore on we started passing better and we became more competative and duly started creating some chances for ourselves, this gave the lads some confidence in themselves, and it was nice to finish off the game with a well taken penalty by our captain Jojo Brazill who stepped up to take the spot kick, im sure it will be the first of many goals for him this season, well done lads, we will only get stronger and stronger with every game.

Todays U10's match

Our U10's boys had their first match in the county league today when taking on Knockainey at home in Kilbreedy.

In the first half they tried hard but this being their first ever game their first touch and passing was a little rushed which inevitably gifted the possesion to the opposition, and credit must go to them as they made the most of this and scored three quick goals, however in the second half our lads settled a little more and played better and apart from one unfortunate mistake from our goalkeeper which cost us another goal they kept working really hard right upto the final whistle.

The lads will learn a lot from this match today and as the season goes on they will only get stronger and stronger, well done lads, keep it up, you were a credit to your club today.

Our captain for the match was Alan Byrne, and as a captain should he led by example and played exceptionaly well for the team, well done Alan.

Just to say a hearty thanks to all those parents, committee members, coaches, and some of our older players, who all have volunteered for this weeks bag packing fundraiser at Dunnes in Charleville.

A tough learning curve

Our U14's lads had their first match in the league today, and it turned out to be a baptism of fire for them as they were beaten by a well drilled Rathkeale team who played well on the day and made the most of their chances.

It was a tough learning curve for our lads but they will bounce back and will just keep improving with every match.

Our next piece of action see's our U10's boys take on Knockainey at home next Saturday (5th Sept), Kick off is at 3pm, so please come and support the lads.

PHOTOS FROM THE SOCCER CHALLENGE

photos of our fun day out

10's SOCCER TOURNAMENT

Talk about short notice .... we were asked as a club to take part in St. Davids (Cullen, Co. Tipp) 10's Soccer challenge, last night, and the match was today. We ended up with enough players for a team at 10am, with our first match at 11am!

It was hard to track down players at such short notice due to holidays etc, but we managed in the end to field 9 players (7 a side and 2 subs), they were; Darragh Browne, Jerry O'Dea, Michael Duce, Cormac Browne, Conor Heffernan, Daniel Moloney,Roger Clery, Darragh Treacy & Jack Connolly

Now bearing in mind, most of these lads have never played a soccer match before, some of the players had never even met before, and 3 of them were only 7. ....... Well lets say we were not expecting too much......

But well done lads, because we were in for a pleasant surprise, we have some little stars on our hands, because our first match we lost 1-0 after an unlucky goal went past Jerry (who was in top form in goal). The second we were roundly trounced by Kilmallock (the eventual winners).
The third match saw us leading 2-0 at half time. (after 2 great goals from Michael and Jerry - Michael incidently scoring the first ever goal for Castle United!) but the 2nd half saw us go down 4-2. However in the last match against the hosts, we managed to score 4 great goals (2 to Cormac and 2 to Daniel) and won 4-3. (see video of two of goals from final game right here on the blog)

So a fantastic day was had, the lads really enjoyed themselves, all the team played great, every player worked hard for the team, and we would sincerely like to thank them for playing, and the parents who turned out at such very short notice.

And we've been invited back next year - watch out Kilmallock!! ;)

A lovely finish from Cormac.

A fantastic chip over the goalie from Danny Moloney, two great goals from our final match, well done lads.

IRISH TEAM TRAINING SESSION

Click on the photo to make it screen sized.....

The morning after the night before ..... all reports are the lads had a great time, they met with quite a few of the players, got some autographs, had their photos taken with Liam Brady, and John Delaney.

All enjoyed watching the national team training. (lets hope they beat the Aussies on Weds.) The new strip was much admired, and they all came home to chips, nuggets and sausages at the Castle, no better way to round off the evening.

More photos will follow in the next day or two.

SUPER SUNDAY - KIT LAUNCH

Well we had something special up our sleeves for the launch of the Castle United strip, but couldn't say anything before now. But as I write 26 registered players of Castle United, our U14 boys, and U12 boys, and representatives from the girls and younger boys team, have been taken by coach to Tipperary Town, to watch the IRISH INTERNATIONAL SOCCER TEAM!

This great opportunity for our lads is allowing them to get close and personal at a training session for the team, ahead of Wednesdays international match with Australia.

Till they get home we won't know the full details of what went on, but we are hoping they will have enjoyed photos and signing sessions with some of the team after training.

Look out tomorrow for photos of what I am sure has been a great trip out. I am sure the lads will agree they looked great in the new strip too...

There is even supper at the Bulgaden Castle Lounge afterwards (thank you Mary and Conal)

New Team Strip Arrives

Well if the wow factor will help us score goals, this strip will certainly do it, The team strips arrived yesterday from the makers Azzurri from Waterford, and do they look good...... It won't be long now before all the teams are wearing them for their first team photo.

Hurry Now to Register!!! - Girls wanted!

Well we now have most kids signed up, but if you have not signed, please do so quickly, for insurance purposes and registration to the league. Also one of our teams are a bit short of players, so if you are or if you know a 12-14 girl who would like to play please get in touch, don't forget we are not held to parishes, so girls from all the local area are welcome.

First training session and registration night

Well its official now, we have over 35 kids signed up to play, we are holding another player registration at the castle lounge, 6.30pm friday night, hopefully the other 35 kids on the books will come and sign that night. We need everyone signed to get some meaningful training done before the season starts!!

Talking of training, the coaches (excepting those on holidays) and the u14's had the benefit of the expert assistance of Conor Nestor, the Co. Limerick Development Officer for the FAI. For their first training session of the season.
I hope the coaches and boys found it enlightening and fun, and training sessions for the other age groups will follow shortly.
Hope you like the photos anyway, Ken needs to maybe get a bit closer next time, but you should be able to pick yourselves out............

Castle United - Launch Week

Welcome to Castle United, you will find us in the parish of Bulgaden/Martinstown, Co. Limerick.
But we will be welcoming players from all the local area. Our team is a Soccer team, we don't know how good we will be yet, but winning is not the main goal here (sorry!) its the taking part.

Our club will cater for schoolboys and girls 6-14 years.... We are planning to field 6 teams this year boys U8's 10's 12's and 14's and girls u10's and u14's.

This week will be an exciting week for all of us here at this fledgling club, as it will be the week that our 70 proposed players will register for us. Our coaches will sign up, and our training schedule will be agreed. We have a meeting planned for all those interested to hear our plans for this season and beyond.

Look out for more details in the days and maybe hours to follow.......................
